Carla Accardi and Giosetta Fioroni

In the Archive Icons project, Filippo Riniolo pays homage to emblematic female figures, including Carla Accardi and Giosetta Fioroni, who have played a pivotal role in the radical reworking of twentieth-century art. Through their transformation into icons, Riniolo explores their symbolic value, attributing to them a sacredness that transcends mere figurative representation.

Carla Accardi, a pioneer of abstract art, and Giosetta Fioroni, a leading figure in Roman figuration, are both icons capable of transcending mere mimicry. In the artist’s language, the icon becomes a corpus of signs and symbols that make these figures recognisable beyond their somatic traits. As explained in other works, the icon is a transfiguration that does not limit itself to physical appearance but draws from a visual language capable of crystallising the essence of the artist, identifiable through symbols rather than facial features.

Riniolo, by reinterpreting the traditional concept of the icon, transforms these two artists into emblems of a resilient artistic and intellectual femininity that extends beyond mere representation. His works serve as declarations of value and as testimony to the power of a legacy that continues to nourish and reshape the contemporary landscape, imparting new meaning to the body, memory, and the history of art.
