Filippo Riniolo
Born in Milan in 1986, he lives and works in Rome, where he graduated in 2011 from the Academy of Fine Arts with a thesis on the impact of financialization on contemporary art. His practice explores poetic, political, social, and historical themes, always in dialogue with current events and rooted in a deep engagement with the past. His research spans the relationship between the body and power, sexual and gender diversity, and postcolonial discourse.
A central thread in his work is the interplay between the artist’s identity and European history. His pieces often draw on elements of Greek and Latin culture as a means of re-reading the present. His practice is grounded in the belief that a European artist must be able to engage with the immense historical weight they inherit—otherwise, it risks becoming a burden that crushes rather than informs. Philosophy, philology, and religion are among the tools he uses to interpret the world around us, in a practice deeply attuned to the rhythms and possibilities of new technologies.
His work moves fluidly across media, encompassing installation, performance, sound, and video—at times even painting, altarpieces, or sculpted fragments of marble. Each formal choice depends on the message and field of inquiry. The use of chemical processes and the revival of ancient techniques form part of an evolving relationship with history—one that is at once critical, material, and experimental.
He has exhibited in several solo events, which include "Fiere" in Tourin and " A Crow Upside Down" in Rome in 2023, "selezioni" in MAXXI MUSEUM in Rome, “dell’eroina e dell’incenso” at Traffic Gallery in Bergamo, “if you look at them well and listen to them” at Spazio44 in 2018, “Loro” in Casavuota (Rm) in 2017, “A jouful sens at work” for the 2016 Milan Furniture Fair , “Invisible hand” at MauMau Gallery in Istanbul, conclusion of an artist residency in 2015, “His presence” at Sponge Arteconteporanea (Pergola) in 2014, “LifeLong learning” at the CIAC Museum in Genazzano, 2012.
